Glider Competition

The grade 11 Engineering Design students had their final competition at lunch on Friday June 3rd. Their task was to build a glider, that when released from 12 metres above the gym floor, would travel the farthest before landing.

This project has fairly simple construction requirements but requires many test launches to find the precise way to balance the glider and the precise angle at which it should be released. Many flew really well, but turned around and headed back. Some crashed to the ground with a horrible thud. However, the successful ones were beautiful to watch - almost magical.

The very best glider (see below) was the one flown by Shafayath H., Andrew S and Sasha M.

Danforth CTI's Track & Field Team Compete at the Ontario Finals

Track & Field athletes John Reston and Hannah Dmowski did Danforth CTI proud by qualifying for this year’s provincial championships (OFSAA) in Windsor. Both athletes qualified by throwing personal bests in the javelin at Toronto’s Metro Championship: John throwing 44.78m in the senior boys category and Hannah throwing 27.03m in the midget girls. John has coincidentally been accepted into the University of Windsor Kinesiology program for next fall and will take his hammer throwing skills to the Windsor track team. Meanwhile, Hannah has three more years of javelin throwing ahead of her at Danforth and undoubtedly more trips to OFSAA. Redhawks track coaches , Mr. Vidovich and Ms. Milburn, are already looking forward to next year and planning to expand and improve on a team that had over 20 members who trained hard day after day for several months and competed admirably with the best athletes in the city.

Hospitality and Tourism Students Create Dishes From Around The World

As part of their culminating activity, grade 10 Hospitality and Tourism students cooked and baked some delicious dishes from around the world.  This gave students an opportunity to share their family's culture or to prepare a dish from somewhere that they would love to visit. They also demonstrated the skills that they learned in class over the year.

See below for some examples: Ackee and Saltfish (Jamaica), Chap Jae (Korea), Cabbage Rolls (Ukraine), Fish and Chips (England), and Lamingtons (Australia).

Music Performances in the Danforth Community!

On May 24th, a group of nearly 40 music students performed at the Jack Layton Seniors' Residence and Avondale Retirement Residence. The local seniors enjoyed a variety of performances from our school musicians. Later that week, the students performed a lunch time concert in the cafeteria, where our own staff and students could hear the great sounds of our ensembles. Congratulations to our performers who played beautifully and represented our school so well! Kudos to Ms. Prole for facilitating the performances and we look forward to hearing the school band at commencement on June 29th.
