This past week, Champions of the Mind proudly hosted DCTI's first
ever Mocktail Parties! On Wednesday the 2nd and Friday the 4th of March, dozens
of DCTI students and staff joined the mental health committee at lunch for fun and games. The
Mocktail Party was planned by 'Champions of the Mind' in order to educate their
fellow students about safe drinking and partying, as well as the dangers of
alcohol. The events took place in the Chill Room, a classroom that Champions of
the Mind converted into a stress-free area that may be used and enjoyed
by students and clubs.
Guests entered the Chill Room, where they were given a wristband
and a non-alcoholic drink. The Mocktails were prepared by the members of
Champions of the Mind, and contained fun flavours such as cranberry, orange,
and pomegranate, garnished with lime slices. After enjoying a drink of
their choice, the guests would line up for the games. Wearing vision-distorting
goggles, they would walk along a line, unlock a door using a key, and finally "toss
their cookies" by attempting to throw a beanbag into a pretend
toilet. These goggles mimicked the effects of alcohol, in order to show
students how this substance affects their balance, coordination, and judgement.
After completing the circuit, students were able to hang out in the Chill Room,
to watch their friends go through the circuit and to eat their
lunches. The parties were an overwhelming success, the room being
completely full of people at many points. Several guests returned on
Friday, after enjoying the first Mocktail Party. Many of the
guests left with prizes--pens, Mocktail recipes, and much more. Champions of
the Mind hopes to be able to host more Mocktail Parties in the future.
