Mocktail Event

This past week, Champions of the Mind proudly hosted DCTI's first ever Mocktail Parties! On Wednesday the 2nd and Friday the 4th of March, dozens of  DCTI students and staff joined the mental health committee at lunch for fun and games. The Mocktail Party was planned by 'Champions of the Mind' in order to educate their fellow students about safe drinking and partying, as well as the dangers of alcohol. The events took place in the Chill Room, a classroom that Champions of the Mind converted into a stress-free area that may be used and enjoyed by students and clubs.

Guests entered the Chill Room, where they were given a wristband and a non-alcoholic drink. The Mocktails were prepared by the members of Champions of the Mind, and contained fun flavours such as cranberry, orange, and pomegranate, garnished with lime slices. After enjoying a drink of their choice, the guests would line up for the games. Wearing vision-distorting goggles, they would walk along a line, unlock a door using a key, and finally "toss their cookies" by attempting to throw a beanbag into a pretend toilet. These goggles mimicked the effects of alcohol, in order to show students how this substance affects their balance, coordination, and judgement. After completing the circuit, students were able to hang out in the Chill Room, to watch their friends go through the circuit and to eat their lunches. The parties were an overwhelming success, the room being completely full of people at many points. Several guests returned on Friday, after enjoying the first Mocktail Party. Many of the guests left with prizes--pens, Mocktail recipes, and much more. Champions of the Mind hopes to be able to host more Mocktail Parties in the future.

Both students were accepted into the Ted Rogers Management Conference to compete over the march break for $4000 of seed funding for their company from the Ted Rogers School of Business at Ryerson University.
As well, their lengthy application to the Ontario Center for Excellence (OCE) was accepted. What this means is HelpWear is now in the top 70 companies for OCE funding, and they will be able to compete and present at their distinguished "Discovery Conference", to compete for more funding. The event also puts us in OCE's system bettering their grant prospects for the future.

Black History Month Assembly February 26th

The theme of this year’s Black History Assembly was “Hold on to Your Dreams and Never Let Go” as captured in Langston Hughes’ poem.

Dreams

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

For this  year’s assembly there were musicians who played Herbie Hancock’s Chameleon, Shania Bascombe who sang, 'When I look at you', and we also had a Guinness World Record setting rapper Duane Gibson who engaged Danforth CTI students with positive message to defy the odds (DO). Our assembly ended with a tribute to a former teacher of Danforth, Mr. Bairu Sium.
